HOW IT WORKS

What you should know about your septic system

To properly maintain your septic system it’s important to know how things work. In a septic system, solid waste settles to the bottom, while scum rises to the top. The excess liquid is pushed out into the drainfield where it filters back into the ground. Inside the tank, bacteria break down the solids but over time the tank fills up and requires pumping. In this cross section you can see what your tank looks like.

When we pump your septic tank, we access it from the manhole. Sometimes manhole covers are under layers of dirt, become covered by grass or simply can't be located because you've never had your tank pumped before. If that's the case, don't worry! We have professional equipment and can locate your tank for you.

DYE TESTS

Detecting broken lines and leaks

Dye tests are used to show if there is a broken line or show if there are any obvious leaks or issues with the system or drain field. We require that a dye test be performed for septic certifications when a home has been vacant for a period of time.

When performing a septic dye test, we will come out to the property, put the dye in a drain and run a substantial amount of water to ensure that the florescent dye is in the system and works its way out to the drain field. If the dye makes its way to the surface, then there may be an issue, possibly a broken, disconnected, or crushed septic line. Should an issue arise, we may be able to pinpoint with a video inspection what exactly is going on.
